On www.africanhiphopradio.com musicians can upload their music, local radio reporters can broadcast parts of it and air their interviews, and dj’s can place their own dj-sets. All this material can be listened to separately. Regularly this material is converted into a webcast that lasts a couple of hours. This way a radio station emerges to which people contribute worldwidely. The website has an administrative back end (open source), with which a visitor’s own uploads as well as artist uploads can be turned into playlists, which consequently can be played on the site. After their application participating dj’s can download music which they can incorporate in their offline projects.

Impact

AfricanHipHopRadio is successful. During the second broadcast already 45 mp3’s were sent in. Thomas receives about 10 e-mails a day by people who want to cooperate in the project. In total 14,800 persons listened to the first two pilot broadcasts.

This project was executed between December 2004 and June 2005.
