Baas op

www.baasopzuid.nl

The IAN foundation aims to give inhabitants of the districts Pendrecht and Zuidwijk in Rotterdam more insight in the urban development problems of their neighbourhood. In the summer of 2002 the foundation developed the web based inter-active game Baas op Zuid (“Boss in the South”) by order of several housing associations. Because of the success a second version was made consisting only of modules. At the same time, other cities too have shown interest in such means of communication. With the help of Digitale Pioniers one wanted to start realizing a coordinating website for all inter-active games related to resident participation and urban restructuring

Final products

Eventually four new games have been realized with the new software

www.baasindrentsdorp.nl (“boss in Drentsdorp”)
A game about the masterplan for this district in Eindhoven. Its main goal is to inform the residents about the underlying ideas for the realization of this masterplan.

www.zeeburgemeester.nl (“sea mayor”)
Website and game about urban renewal in the Indische Buurt in Amsterdam, in which information, the district’s promotion and involvement by the residents are the main issues. This site will be completed and updated in the next three years.

www.ghth.nl This site is a complete information site about the restructuring of two districts in Rotterdam. In the course of years all information will be kept up-to-date via this site, the sales and letting of the houses will take place on it, as well as the communication with all involved parties (architect, housing association, developer and municipality).

www.caberg-malpertuis.nl This is an extended game that has been used as a participation model for the restructuring policy in this Maastricht district. Residents, directors and housing associations have played the game to test preferences and opinions. This game was the first commercial assignment, and has been developed without the help of Digitale Pioniers.

Impact

Because the IAN foundation has made standard modules for different situations and assignments it can now survive financially by developing new games with low extra costs. The games attract a lot of visitors to the site. A record of 3,350 gamers in one day was reached, after a small report on www.nu.nl.

This project was executed between February 2003 and June 2004.
