The origin of Buurtenonline was a typical eureka moment. Anne Blankert considered local residents communicating with each other via a central site on the basis of their postal code. Marcel Wickel offered to start up the website : www.buurtenonline.nl The project team, now consisting of four, tries to help people to keep their part of the website up-to-date, and to draw other local residents’ attention to the site.

Final Products

The makers of Buurtenonline noticed that these neighbourhood volunteers felt a need to make the site more personal, and liked to introduce themselves via the site to their neighbours. So a new tool was developed to make this possible. In order to get more messages on the central site a box is developed that can be placed on one’s own site, and in which messages from Buurtenonline automatically appear. Messages placed via this box also appear on the central site. Further, it’s now possible to order promotion materials via the site to promote the one’s own section on Buurtenonline.

Impact

Now that Buurtenonline is working well technically and its name has risen considerately, every week one to four new neighbourhood volunteers come forward. Buurtenonline can now support them with promotion materials and extra tools on the site to draw the neighbours’ attention to the site. Furthermore, with the Syndication tool content can be generated from other sites. Now Buurtenonline is going to try and create a community feeling around the site. A neighbourhood volunteers’ day is going to be organized
