Great Firewall of China

Is the Internet free for everybody? In China 120 million people are online, who don't have the possibility to use the internet as the rest of the world knows it. Search engines deliver empty pages when you type in words like "democracy" or "porn". This revelation lead documentary filmmaker Yan Ting Yuen and interactive designer Jonas Vorwerk to make the website the Great Firewall Of China.

The Great Firewall of China is supposed to serve as a “online watchdog” and provide information with regard to the most recent situation concerning Internet censorship in China. On the discussionboards it's possible to consult the most recent information on censorship on the Chinese Internet. Naturally it is also possible to test search strings and links. With the help of a ingenious system it is possible to verify from every country in the world wheither the relevant search strings are visible in China. This way censorship is made transparent and can be monitored with the help of contributions by visitors worldwide.
Possibly the censorship will disappear in ten years, and everybody, especially Chinese people, will be able to review, how censorship worked and what was censored when. All collected data, is stored and will be saved as long as possible for posterity. Hoping it will be torn down one day: the Great Firewall of China.
