Geluidsnet

The Geluids.net foundation has been set up after reports in the media about the
lack of measuring data in the debate about the possible noise pollution caused
by Schiphol Airport. It was said to be very hard and expensive to measure. The
project was meant to offer people who live around the airport a means with which
they can show what really happens. By collecting data on a large scale
Geluids.net wants to provide an actual base for a rational discussion about
combining living, working, and transport functions in densely populated areas.
With the help of Digitale Pioniers special measuring points have been developed
that can picture the noise pollution via a website.
Final Products
For measuring the noise 25 new measuring points were developed and placed in
population clusters. These are equiped with a certified microphone and are
supported by Ruf freq-analysis software. The microphones can distinguish
airplane noise from surround noise. The recognition is made possible by Sound
Intelligence software from Groningen, a cheaper and much better system than
NOMOS. All these measuring data are made visible on www.geluids .net.
With the help of a map one can select an area where the
measuring equipment is used. Then one can ask for an up-to-date video report of
the noise pollution in the chosen area, measured
Impact
The culture and attitude within the Dutch Committee of
Experts on Airplane noise changed because of the influence on the agenda. It now
also reports to Parliament about the measuring of noise as a way of providing
information. There is a cautious European cooperation with German contacts.
That’s why Geluids.net receives hardware propositions; soon the reports will run
via a Frankfurt based server. The municipalities of Amsterdam and Zaanstad, and
two residents’ organizations became clients, and there are a lot of requests for
information from other municipalities.
This project was executed between February 2004 and
September 2004
