KIJKRADIO
www.kijkradio.nl
Kijkradio, online since September 2003, is an idea of
Marjolijn Ruyg. It’s the winning project of the Kids & Tools 2003 contest,
organized by Cinekid. Kijkradio is intended for children between 8 and 12 years
old. To further develop Kijkradio facilities were needed that could enable
cooperation between the children with regard to content. With the help of
Digital Pioneers the communicative functions are extended with the Voice
traveller tool, which broadens Kijkradio’s expressive
potential.
Final products
www.kijkradio.nl is an internet application with which children can set up their own Kijkradio
station and be in charge of their own ‘broadcasts’. A Kijkradio broadcast
consists of one or more programmes, varying from news items, advertising,
weather reports, tall stories, et cetera. These programmes consist of animations
and texts that are made and recorded by the children themselves. The design is
also largely up to them.
In the summer of 2005 the new Voice traveller tool has been
implemented on the site. This is an interview tool that enalbles children to
interview each other in real time. The interview is to be filmed and can be
watched by other children. To adjust the Voice traveller to the children’s
wishes a user research has been executed. To do this Marjolijn visited children
in their own environment at school. In the Library one can find the purpose of
this research, motivated by Marjolijn, and its results.
Impact
With Kijkradio Marjolijn won Cinekid’s Kids & Tools 2003
award. Since then Kijkradio produced 6,000 stations. With the Voice traveller
tool children can playfully learn how to cooperate while making media, and at
the same time develop their editorial skills. This way they learn how to
communicate about backgrounds, opinions and values. Kijkradio also wants to
enlarge the participants’ experience by actively and creatively bringing other
worlds close at hand. For instance, a network of (children’s) organizations will
be built up that can stimulate children’s media consciousness and media skills.
