The Kindertelefoon exists for more than 25 years, but it only recently discovered that children also wanted to talk with it in a digital way. So the Kindertelefoon started with a pilot project to reach target groups that hardly speak with the Kindertelefoon. By means of a chat application it wanted to reach children between 13 and 18 years old and boys in general. During the project an application was being used that didn’t meet the security demands. That’s why, with the help of Digitale Pioniers, a super secured 1-on-1 chat has been developed. This chat is very convenient when offering personal help via the internet, but it didn’t exist yet. The chat is a big success; many other organizations are interested in it.

The Kindertelefoon ordered to develop the chat application on the basis of open source Jabber. Others can therefore use the chat too if they want to offer help online. Because of security not all code is available.

The Kindertelefoon will develop a new method to overlook the chat conversations. The method used for the phone doesn’t apply any longer. Everybody who is interested in this method can contact the Kindertelefoon.

Impact

The Kindertelefoon discovered the opportunities of new media, after more than 26 years of phoning. The newly developed chat is a big success. The number of applications for the chat proves that children apparently have a need to communicate in this manner. That’s why there is a lot of interest from other organizations that offer help via internet. For the Kindertelefoon the chat’s success means developing a new method and new training to enable the operators to use the chat to its full capacity.

From March 2005 onwards a continuation project started that is being financed by the VSB foundation. In the end all 20 regional Kindertelefoons will use the chat.
