MILK is Esther Polak’s follow-up project to Amsterdam Realtime
During this project participants, while watching their individual GPS tracks,
started spontaneously to tell extraordinary stories about their relationship
with the city of Amsterdam. With the MILK project one wanted to further explore
these storytelling posibilities with the help of GPS. For this purpose the
European milk transport routes were mapped out which tell the stories of the
daily lives of the milk transporters involved. With the help of Digitale
Pioniers a website has been realized on which the registration of the process of
dairy transport is shown.
Final products
The project consists of the registration of the process: the
following of a dairy transport from the cow’s udder to the consumer’s mouth.
Everybody involved in this chain is followed by GPS. The GPS tracks are
visualized with specially developed software and shown to the ones involved.
This visualization, combined with the sound recordings of the participants’
responses and photographs, are shown on www.milkproject.net converted into an installation that is shown on conferences. A survey of these
is shown on the website. The MILK project is a form of ‘locative art’. The
project explores the visual and documentary possibilities of GPS technology and
therefore engages itself along the boundaries of the visual arts, antropological
research, film-like documentary, and innovative cartography.Alle verzamelde
informatie wordt verwerkt in een installatie die op conferenties wordt getoond.
Een overzicht hiervan is te zien op de website.
Impact
MILK received extensive media attention in the Netherlands
and Latvia, and already offered many presentations on several national and
international conferences. MILK also wants to bring this form of new media art
under the attention of the ordinary art sector and the common public, especially
agrarians.
