Ookjij kan meebeslissen (“You too can decide”)
www.ookjij.nl
Ookjij enables mentally challenged youths who cannot read to
consume information by themselves, to get in touch with others, and to enjoy
various forms of entertainment. Ookjij wants to extend the existing supply on
internet with pilots on various subjects. The aim is to better inform this group
so that they can emancipate themselves and can better integrate in our society.
With the help of Digitale Pioniers the Ookjij foundation extended the website
with an inter-active tool with which the youths can learn more about politics
and civics, and about how they can play a role in those.
Final products
Ookjij gave a lot of thought to the best method of offering
information to mentally challenged people. The foundation investigated which
navigation they feel by intuition, what kind of contents (texts and images)
interests them, how long they can concentrate, and whether there are tricks to
hold their attention longer. To do this, children from a ZML school were
observed while using Ookjij. Together with the online tool a lesson kit was
developed which enables teachers to integrate the online part into the class
programme. The research and an example of the lesson kit can be downloaded from
www.ookjij.nl.
Impact
Ookjij.nl kan meebeslissen enables mentally challenged
youths to solidly found their desire to use their right to vote. In practice
these youths are often made a ward of their parents, by which they lose their
right to vote. This is a thorn in the flesh of the initiators of Ookjij.nl.
Involved politicians said that the questions asked by the youths proved that
they learned a lot from the new tool.
