The Petities Online foundation wants to enable citizens to
easily raise a social problem on the political agenda. Every citizen must be
able to start up a petition in order to draw attention from the public to a
given problem. That way one is not depending on politics or the mass media. A
central place is needed where journalists and politicians can follow what’s up
among the population. With the help of Digitale Pioniers a foundation was
founded that developed a website on which starting up a petition is possible and
reliable.
Final Products
On June 1st, 2005 the website went online and petitions
could be started. For every petition a small fee is asked to make sure only
serious petitions are started up. The petition’s initiator will also be the
moderator who controls the authenticity of the signatures. The one who receives
a petition will be able to invite his social network to participate. The
website’s system ensures that a person can only be invited once. This avoids
people to consider an invitation as spam. The foundation’s motto is that all
initiatives and signatures are taken seriously, and are serious.
Impact
With the arrival of this site it is now possible to start a
petition on internet that has real meaning. By using the internet medium a
petition’s reach is larger and can be signed by more people. Consequently a
petition can have a heavier impact. Because the signatures are spread all over
the country journalists and politicians can see what truly occupies the
population’s mind.
