www.sterrekind.nl

Sterrekind (“Star child”) is an independent foundation supported by a number of companies and prominent children’s doctors. In the Netherlands there are 250,000 children with a chronic or prolonged disease. Sterrewereld wants to improve the quality of life of sick children by creating an interactive, safe, and virtual world via smart multimedia applications. Through this children at home or in one of the 200 care centres in the Netherlands can get easy access to the possibilities of Sterrewereld. It is a meeting point on the internet for children and youths with a chronic or prolonged disease. By the end of 2003 the Sterrekind foundation started with Sterrewereld, a closed website where children with a chronic disease can get in touch with each other. The next step was to turn the site into a web-based one. This was a huge project and the help of Digitale Pioniers was especially directed towards setting up a good team of (voluntary) editors.

Final products

In developing www.sterrekind.nl they learned a lot about the security, the editors, and working with volunteers. In the Library one can find a research item about internet use among children and an editor’s manual for volunteers.

Impact

By setting up the team of voluntary editors in a well organized way it proves to be possible to weekly refresh the content on Sterrewereld. The visitors’ input is used to decide which subjects are popular and where more information is needed. All visitors’ reactions are filtered against undesirable content, without violating the children’s privacy. Sterrewereld has become a very well known website among its target group. Because of the professional image many sponsors like to commit themselves to the project, which enables the team to grow further and to offer more tools to the children.
