The Cultuurlijn foundation has brought together culture, internet, and new mobile technology. The initiators Ruud and Bert from Cultuuronline wanted to make culture more attractive by enabling walkers to ask more information about the buildings they encounter on the road, like monuments. With the help of Digitale Pioniers Talktome! developed a system with which cultural institutions can offer their public a new service. The idea is that this way culture can attract more attention from a broader audience, and especially from youth. Through this system cultural institutions can place interactive walks on their site. Because of the use of the mobile phone the concept is very suitable to reach the youth.

Final products

The foundation offers a CMS that enables cultural institutions and other interested parties to develop routes themselves, complete with photos and sound. The information isn’t only available by phone, it’s also possible to print the walk with background information from the internet. It takes about three days to disclose an already existing walk via Talktome! More info on www.talktomenl.nl

Impact

The use of the mobile phone appears to be extraordinarily suitable to reach young people. For example, students from the Hogeschool INHolland made a walk along the beach near IJmuiden, where entertainment as well as culture were to be found. After the walk they appeared to appreciate the cultural part especially. With this system every cultural institution can make routes and put them on its own website, by which a whole new public can be approached. At the moment there are many contacts with organizations throughout the whole country. The Cultuurlijn foundation is working on a survey of the realized routes and a survey of the costs and necessary input of clients.
